VIDEO: Singing November goodbye (Ej padá, padá rosenka)
A November lullaby, in the wonderfully lit Deák Ferenc Street in Budapest
I came across this song three years ago when I lived in Ceské Budejovice in South Bohemia for a short time. In an art gallery, I found a few-page publication with poems, photos, paintings, artist presentations, and it included this short song, along with its score. I learned right away and love to sing it ever since. All I know about it is that the Czechs and Slovaks know it as their own, I wasn’t able to found out its origin.
And this is one of my "stages" these days: "Fashion Street", Deák Ferenc utca in Budapest. Yes, street - I make no secret of that I do busking, for in these very restricted times the singer sings where his audience is. It's a little cold already - but isn't it beautiful?
Czech lyrics:
Ej padá, padá rosenka
Spaly by moje očenka
[: Spaly by moje, spaly by aj tvoje
Spaly by, duša má, oboje :]
Ej padá, padá listopad
Pozdravuj milů nastokrát
[: Pozdravuj milů, holuběnku sivů
Že ja sa nevrátím nikdy viac :]
English translation:
The dew falls, falls,
You should sleep, my little eyes,
Mine should sleep, yours should sleep as well,
We should sleep, my soul, both of us.
November falls, falls,
Greet my beloved one hundred times,
Greet my beloved, the gray dove,
(and tell her) That I will not return.

This recording was also made in the same way as the rest of the Travel With a Song series: without any technical manipulation, you get the sound, sight, and atmosphere of being right next to me as I sing: I make the recording while singing.
I’d love to show you a lot of nice photos from here too, but now I only have an old cell phone that has a rather lousy camera. Maybe Little Jesus will bring me some good photo gear... (Did you know? Here in Hungary and other countries of Central Europe, it’s not Santa Claus but the Baby Jesus or the Little Angel who bring the Christmas presents)
If you liked the song above, listen to these too:
When you download this multimedia album, you also get videos and photos along with the songs. I made it all in South Bohemia, in beautiful places.
